People are beautifully strange, they fascinate me. Everyone has their own stories and quirky eccentricities. For me this is a never-ending supply of inspiration. I have found the most difficult thing about being an artist is talking about my work. Recently visiting the Beryl Cook exhibition in Plymouth, I was brought to tears not only by the outstanding paintings but by the reactions and emotions of the audience. No art exhibition that I have ever admired over the years (and there have been many – I’m quite old!) has evoked so much joy, happiness, memory jogging and genuine pleasure as this! If I can create an ounce of that reaction from one of my paintings then I will have mastered what I set out to achieve. I want my paintings to portray the funnier side of life.
In my other life, I am and have been for many years, a highly published International surface pattern designer and illustrator with companies such as Henry Glass, Tri-Coastal, Ravensburger and Paramount to name a few. Any more would be boring and could sound “braggy”!
Painting had to take a back seat behind my design career and more importantly rearing our three delightful sons who I am incredibly and cringeworthily proud of. Now that they are all grown up and the little blighters have bled us dry and fled the nest they have abandoned us to become a successful Southerner, Geordie & Scouser!
So now my lovely IT Department/barista/Husband (in that order) and I are left to do our thing! Mine is to paint and hopefully make somebody in this crazy unpredictable world get a warm fuzzy feeling and maybe even crack a smile. Even better buy an original or one of my prints so I can buy my Mum (Babs) a bigger bungalow with bigger walls to hang all the prints of mine that she keeps ordering.
